Sondrio – home of the Tellcard initiative

Set in the beautiful Lombardy region of northern Italy, Sondrio has been keen to take its place at the contactless table.

The town is the home of the Tellcard initiative, a scheme that uses contactless technology to enable payments of up to 15 euros on Credito Valtellinese Visa V Pay cards. Launched in 2008, more than 9,000 cards have been issued so far.

The bank is also conducting a trial of V Pay contactless debit using Nokia 6212 cell phones. This pilot is the first to put a contactless version of V Pay on an NFC handset and it has enabled 50 Credito Valtellinese employees to make purchases at 180 locations in Sondrio, ChiavennaMorbegno, Tirano and Bormio. Other companies involved include Key Client Cards & Solutions and NXP Semiconductors.

In 2009 Banca Popolare di Sondrio teamed with Oberthur Technologies for the Carta y region di Ateneo prepaid contactless Visa card which could be used for ID and access by students and staff at two Milanese universities.  The card can also be used to record student attendance at exams, classes and seminars, as well as enabling access to internet and university web services.
