A recent article in NFC TImes reports that the French Government is offering up to 20 million Euros to French cities and other local agencies to encourage and assist them roll out NFC-based services.

Top of the list are applications aimed at transportation and parking fare collection as well as access control to municipal buildings such as local government offices and schools as well as tag reading in museums and other tourist sites.

The article claims that the money will go for a total of 20 to 30 projects and cities have until July 1st to declare their intent to apply for funding.

France had stolen a huge march on the NFC rollout by integrating the technology into some very large trials e.g. Nice however there is perhaps a feeling that they may be losing their advantage now that the likes of Google and their partners are looking to start larger scale trials in the US.
