The Tennessee city of Memphis may be famous for its music, but it’s also started to make a name for itself in the contactless arena.

In 2007 it was part of a multi-city NFC trial that also involved Jackson, Mississippi. The initial trial, which aimed to move to a wider consumer rollout in 2008, involved around 75 Cellular South customers across the two cities. Customers were given a Kyocera handset incorporating the mobile operator’s WirelessWallet service so they could make payments at around 50 merchants and vending machines across the two cities. The payment function was backed by Bank of America using MasterCard PayPass technology.
