The Chinese city of Xiamen has given contactless the thumbs up with a series of deployments that highlight the benefits of the technology.
In 2006, in what was one of the first field trials of NFC in Asia, China Mobile, Philips, Nokia and Xiamen e-Tong Card tested NFC payments with 100 participants in the city. Merchants including shops, restaurants and theatres, as well as transport providers, were involved in the scheme. Participants were issued with Nokia 3220 cell phones which they could use to pay bus and ferry fares as well as make purchases from shops and other outlets.
The city is also home to contactless ticketing based on Watchdata’s SIMpass NFC technology. The success of this scheme has led to rollouts in cities across China as well as other parts of Asia.
